Save the Cat Beat Sheet: Iron Giant - By: Alejandro J. Padilla-Rodriguez

Set-Up - Hogarth is a troublemaker who hangs around at his mother’s diner and takes in strange pets (Ex. Squirrel), he hears a story from a local crazy about a strange object that came from space.

Theme Stated - Violence is bad. Everyone in the bar is talking about sputnik/the russians/etc, and the iron giant as things that are going to destroy them, and their belief that the government will fix their problems (hopefully by shooting it.)

Catalyst - Hogarth catches The Iron Giant eating a power station after he sneaks out at night.

Debate - Hogarth, intrigued by the alien robot, investigates it while it’s sleeping and decides to throw a few rocks at it to see if it’s still functional, he then decides to back down as soon as it wakes up and runs into the road.

Break into Two - Hogarth decides to go back to see the robot after his mother doesn’t believe him.

B Story - Kent Mansley from the United States Government arrives, acts like a chump and has his car bit in half while he’s away.

The Promise of the Premise - Hogarth makes friends with the robot, teaches him the difference between a rock and a tree, the robot learns to speak, etc. The Giant is then moved to Dean’s (a deadbeat beatnik junkman artist) junkyard, where he builds sculptures (which the giant then eats).

Midpoint - Everything is great!...sort of. The Iron Giant is safe hanging out with Dean in the junkyard, eating art and scrap, meanwhile Hogarth is being followed by the jerk national security agent Kent Mansley. (who Hogarth feeds chocolate laxatives to and is stuck dumping all over for a while). The Giant then creates a tidal wave by cannonballing into a lake.

Bad Guys Close in - Kent finds a picture that Hogarth took with the giant, and interrogates him, threatens to take him away from his mother if he doesn’t cooperate, Hogarth then discloses the location of the giant. They have a really aggressive staredown across the hallway for a while.

All is Lost - Everything’s terrible. Hogarth triggers the Giant’s defenses, thinks it’s a killing machine and Dean shoos it away, resulting in the robot running away into town.

Dark Night of the Soul - The army is attacking the giant, and the government is planning on nuking it. The Iron Giant goes berserk and is about to murder Hogarth in cold blood.

Break into Three - Hogarth reminds The Iron Giant that he is not a gun, causing him to retract his attack gear and realize the situation they’re in.

Finale - The Iron Giant decides to save the town by flying into the nuke while it’s up in the sky, and saving everyone from nuclear devastation.

Final Image - Hogarth still has a screw from the giant in his house, it begins to beep and goes out of the window, signaling that the giant is still ‘alive’ and putting itself back together, the camera travels to a snowy place, where all of the giant’s parts are gathering back up around the head.

THE END
